Case Study of Vacuum Evaporators in the Evaporation and Concentration of Pharmaceutical Intermediate Wastewater and Amino Acid Process Solutions

I. Project Background

The core research of this scientific research institute focuses on three major directions: chemical transformation methodology, chemical biology, and the creation of organic new materials. It aims to drive the development of core technologies in fields such as biomedicine and strategic materials through breakthroughs in basic science.
During the R&D and production process, the customer has requirements for treating 6 tons/day of pharmaceutical intermediate wastewater and concentrating 9.5 tons/day of amino acid derivative process solution. We have provided the customer with 2 industrial-grade low-temperature evaporators (3 tons/day each) and 3 food-grade low-temperature evaporators (2 tons/day, 3 tons/day, and 4.5 tons/day respectively). The specific conditions of the materials to be treated by the customer are as follows:
  1. 6 Tons/Day of Pharmaceutical Intermediate Wastewater

    In the R&D and production process of pharmaceutical intermediates, 6 tons of pharmaceutical intermediate wastewater are generated daily. The challenges in treating such wastewater lie in its “high toxicity, high salt content, and poor biodegradability”. Traditional processes struggle to meet discharge standards, and the limited on-site space cannot accommodate complex wastewater treatment equipment.

  2. Evaporation and Concentration of Amino Acid Derivative Process Solution (9.5 Tons/Day)

    The process solution to be treated by the customer is a rare amino acid derivative, widely used in the food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries. The customer required customized food-grade low-temperature evaporators for the evaporation and concentration of this amino acid derivative process solution, with a total treatment capacity of 9.5 tons/day.

  1. Treatment of Pharmaceutical Intermediate Wastewater

    After conducting water quality testing and experiments on the wastewater, the technical team of GRELLIX customized 2 sets of low-temperature evaporation concentrators (model HP-C-150, 3 tons/day each) for the customer, taking into account the wastewater volume and on-site conditions. After treatment by the low-temperature evaporators, the concentration and volume reduction ratio of the wastewater reaches over 90%. The evaporated product water is clear and transparent, and is fully reused in production.

  2. Evaporation and Concentration of Amino Acid Derivative Process Solution

    We customized 3 food-grade low-temperature evaporators for the customer (HP-C-100 | 2 tons/day, HP-C-150 | 3 tons/day, HP-C-225 | 4.5 tons/day). After the equipment is put into operation, the customer can flexibly adjust the concentration ratio of the process solution according to actual needs. In response to the customer’s requirement for on-site mobile equipment, we have equipped the low-temperature evaporators with ultra-high load-bearing, wear-resistant, and durable universal wheels. This allows the customer to flexibly move the evaporators according to changes in treatment scenarios, enhancing management convenience.

III. Equipment Advantages

(1) Excellent Treatment Effect: After the system is put into operation, it can concentrate and reduce wastewater volume by over 90%. The evaporated product water is clear and transparent, enabling full reuse. Only a minimal amount of concentrated liquid remains to be disposed of as hazardous waste, significantly reducing waste liquid treatment costs.

(2) Small Floor Space: The low-temperature evaporator is an integrated skid-mounted device with a compact footprint. Taking the HP-C-150 low-temperature evaporator (3 tons/day treatment capacity) as an example, it only requires 6 square meters of floor space, solving the customer’s problem of limited on-site space.

(3) Plug-and-Play, Flexible and Convenient Management: The equipment features a high degree of integration. It can be put into operation immediately after connecting power supply and pipelines on-site, with simple installation and convenient management.

(4) Remote Monitoring and Unattended Operation: GRELLIX low-temperature vacuum evaporators are equipped with Siemens PLC control modules and an independent Shuiqing cloud-based APP. Real-time online monitoring of more than 70 data items is available, realizing unattended operation and saving labor input.

(5) Low Energy Consumption: The system consumes an average of only 130-150 kWh of electricity per ton of wastewater treated.
